What is a GPA
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. A GPA is given for all students at LGA and is a standard measurement throughout high schools in the nation.
Grade | Points |
---|---|
A | 4 |
B | 3 |
C | 2 |
D | 1 |
For each class a student is assigned a grade, there is an equivalent numerical value assigned to the letter grade. All of the numerical values are then averaged to determine a student’s GPA.
Over the course of a student’s academic career at LGA, their GPA will be averaged every semester. The “Cumulative GPA” refers to the average of all of their semesters. The “Simple GPA” refers to the current semester’s GPA only.
Importance of Grades
How is this important for a 6th – 12th grade student?
For a middle and high school student, a 2.0 GPA is typically a “C Average” student and is considered a dividing line which separates eligible and ineligible students for extracurricular activities like sports, participation in after-school events, and the ability to attend certain functions.
For high school students looking to enter a competitive college/university, especially in the CSU/UC system, the higher the student’s GPA will need to be. Students’ GPAs will be compared down to the thousandth place (e.g. 3.167).
